Bespoke WordPress Build for an ESG Investment Firm
In 2018, I was hired as a freelance WordPress developer by John Burton at Pretty Clever design studio in Bournemouth. John produced a set of pixel-perfect, high-fidelity visuals in Adobe XD, and my role was to translate his work into a fully functional, bespoke WordPress site for Greensphere Capital, a private equity firm focused on sustainable investments. 🌱💰
The brief was clear: build a site that could communicate Greensphere's values to the financial investment community while giving their team the ability to manage content in-house. With John handling the brand identity and creative direction, I focused on delivering a technical build that was streamlined, scalable, and easy for the client to update.
The website needed to represent Greensphere's position in the sustainable finance sector. Built on Roots/Sage, the theme also includes a custom post type for case studies, allowing staff to log in and publish new investment reports directly through the WordPress CMS.
This was delivered as a fully bespoke WordPress build, giving the client a streamlined and scalable platform tailored to their exact needs.
Modular page builder
From John's XD visuals, I developed a custom page builder using Advanced Custom Fields. This included bespoke modules for:
- Team profiles
- Story timeline
- Core investment sectors
The modular setup made it easy for Greensphere's staff to add, remove, and restructure content whenever they needed, without relying on a developer.
WordPress Theme Build
The theme was built to be lightweight and fast, while giving Greensphere full control of their content. The end result combined a flexible CMS with a strong brand design system, creating a site that worked as both a marketing tool and an internal publishing platform.
Final thoughts
This was a rewarding project within the financial investments sector. John Burton's creative design and brand vision set the tone, while my development work ensured the site was robust, practical, and ready for Greensphere's growth journey.
