Working with The Furniture Market to Improve Technical SEO and Performance 🪑
I was hired by Rob Walters (head of e-commerce) at The Furniture Market to take immediate action and to solve technical WordPress issues that were directly affecting the SEO on the Magento storefront.
Their existing WordPress theme had been set up so poorly that it had been featured in a Matt Woodward unboxed video to his 35k YouTube subscribers. 😲
⚠️ Technical SEO Challenges
The WordPress part of The Furniture Market suffered from low page speed scores on mobile, severe index bloat, incorrectly organised taxonomies, issues with incorrect content indexed via XML sitemaps, and loads of broken links. The blog subdomain was directly impacting crawl rate and budget on the root domain.
⚡ What did I do?
I fixed all the technical issues outlined in Matt Woodward's original unboxing video.
My work involved fixing speed traps and improving the page speed for Google Core Vitals, reorganising taxonomies and custom post type data to reduce index bloat, and resolving SEO errors in WordPress, such as broken links, images, and 404s identified in the site crawl.
My WordPress optimisations lifted mobile page speed from 25% to 92%, while also resolving all technical errors.
Fixing the index bloat was critical, as it allowed Google to focus on high-value product and category pages, rather than wasting crawl budget on irrelevant URLs. The client was very pleased with the outcome.
